Soccer Tryout Overview
In 2017, MTA is holding tryouts for our Junior Boys Soccer and Junior Girls Soccer program for kids that are born between 2007 to 2011 on July 12-13, 2018 at Richfield High School between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM. MTA Elite Academy Tryouts, for kids born in 2006 and earlier (U13 and up), will be held on July 30-31, 2018 at National Sports Center in Blaine.
Each age group will have 2 days of tryouts, and it is recommended that players attend both days. If for some reason you are unable to attend both days, please notify the administrators at the time of check in.
MTA Tryout Process
- You must check-in at tryouts
- Pre-registered tryout participants can pickup their tryout number at this time.
- Staff members will provide and overview for each age group.
- Verify your email and phone so we may contact you after tryouts.
- The tryout evaluation process will span between 1-3 dates, depending on age group.
- We recommend families discuss all of the options with your player during the evaluation process. In the case the player does not get selected for their desired team, it is good to have a plan.
- Invitations to join an MTA team will be sent via email/phone within 48 hours after the last tryout session for your age group.
- Please add the mnthunderacademy.org domain to the list of safe senders within your email client (so emails don’t go to the junk folder).
- Once a team is formed, MTA staff will post lists on the tryout results page.
Enjoy your long deserved break from summer soccer.

The Minnesota Thunder Academy was created as model for player development based on the structure of successful European and South American academies. MTA’s model for player development has proven successful with more players advancing to play collegiately, professionally, and for national teams than any other club in the Upper Midwest.
Ages 8 through 12 are the most critical development years of a soccer player’s career. It is at these ages where the basic fundamental skills of soccer are mastered that allow players to compete and be successful as soccer players at the next level of play and where they develop a true love for the game. This year-round program is designed for players ages 8-12 years old who have a higher level of ability, commitment, and interest level in soccer. This program helps prepare players who aspire to play in the MTA Elite Academy.
The Elite Academy program typically consists of two teams at each age-group (U13-U19). All teams train year-round, consistently challenge for State Cup championships, and compete against regional and national opponents. No Minnesota club has been more successful at developing elite players and teams than MTA.
The US Soccer Development Academy’s philosophy is based on increased training, less total games, and more meaningful games using international rules of competition.
MTA is proud to be the only Twin Cities metro area club to have boys teams at all levels of the US Soccer Development Academy.
