US Soccer Development Academy – Overview
The US Soccer Development Academy (DA) is a partnership between U.S. Soccer and the top youth clubs around the country to provide the best youth players in the U.S. with an every day environment designed to produce the next generation of National Team players. The DA is the highest level of male youth soccer competition in the United States.
The US Soccer Development Academy’s philosophy is based on increased training, less total games, and more meaningful games using international rules of competition.
MTA was proud to be the only Minnesota club to have boys teams in the US Soccer Development Academy for years. As of July 2019, we will no longer compete in the USSDA.
What is a Part Time DA player:
- A player that remains with his current club, but has the opportunity to train and potentially play with the USSDA to reach his fullest potential. A PT player consistently trains 3-4 times a week and must train with both teams; recommended 1-2x a week within the DA and 1-3x a week with their non-DA club team. Cost $1,232.
- A player that is not bound to another club and joins an MTA USSDA team after November 1. This PT player will consistently train (3-4 times a week) and play. Cost $2,575.

In addition to competition and training, the US Soccer Development Academy connects national team coaches directly with the academy clubs to develop and identify players and coaches for future youth national teams. Each academy team is evaluated by a member of the men’s scouting network at least ten times each year and each US Soccer Development Academy club receives two formal evaluations in over 100 categories each year from U.S. Soccer’s technical staff.
Teams are based in the Twin Cities metro area. Players include those from hometowns in the Twin Cities as well as out-state Minnesota.
Each team (U13-U19) carries a maximum of 23 full-time players. The U12 Pre-DA carries a maximum roster of 26 full-time that is split into two groups for games.
The Development Academy Program is a full-time, 10-month program. The season begins in September and concludes with Championships in July. Clubs will break from league play for periods of inactivity due to weather and the end of the season.
Tryouts for the MTA Development Academy teams typically occur in late July. For more detail, please visit the Tryouts section.

Development Academy FAQ
Financial aid may be available to those that qualify. An application with proof of income must be presented to the MTA Board of Directors on a yearly basis. There are also opportunities for players/teams to participate in fundraisers to help curb costs.
MTA is home to many players who participate in multiple sports and MTA celebrates the multi-sport athlete experience. The desire is that the player is respectful of the commitment to the team and be present at most team events. Athletes playing in the US Soccer Development Academy, ECNL, MTA Elite Academy, MTA Junior Academy, MRL, MYSA Premier, or MYSA Classic 1 level must be willing to be at a vast majority of the team’s training sessions and competitive events. The cost is the same for players who attend all events and those who attend on a less regular basis.
