How Tryouts Work

Five steps, start to finish.

    Tryouts are for the 2027–28 season. Use your player’s grade in fall 2027.

Which age group is my player?

Teams are formed by school year (August 1 – July 31 birthdates), so most players play with their grade. Pick your player’s grade in fall 2027.

Tryout questions.

When and where are tryouts?
Tryouts for the 2027–28 season will be held on multiple dates in July 2027. Dates and locations will be announced in the MTA Nation newsletter first. Sign up here.
Are there early ECNL tryouts?
No. All Minnesota tryouts follow TCSL’s universal tryout window. The ECNL Pre-Tryout Clinic and Tryout Prep Camps are the best way to get ready.
How many teams are formed at each age?
It depends on the age group and who tries out. See this season’s teams on Teams, Costs & Expectations.
How often do ECNL teams travel?
Depending on age, ECNL teams have 1–3 National Events and 4–6 away conference weekends, plus possible showcases and playoffs. Every offer comes with a detailed season plan.
Is travel chaperoned?
Families are always welcome to travel with the team, and most do. To save money, families can share a chaperone. If players stay in all-player rooms, those families appoint a chaperone and share hotel and meal costs.
Can my player try out for an older age group?
Players try out in their own age group. Players with August or September birthdays who play with an older grade can submit the Grade Alignment Application.
What if we miss tryouts?
Fill out the player interest form and a staff member will follow up about open spots. U8 players can join anytime.
How do we pay?
Player fees are billed by MTA through Byga, with payment plans available. Team fees are paid through Snap!Spend, where every team has its own transparent account.
